More visitors to Rakino 1 & 2

Mrs Buchanan kindly bought in some of her rescue turtles and pet tortoises. We learnt lots of new facts.

Here are some of our blog posts about it. 

Today we had a very special visit from some little cute creatures. If you guessed turtles (and tortoises,) your right! Mrs Buchanan, who is part of the turtle rescue group, brought in some awesome turtles and tortoises to show us! 

She told us the differences about tortoises and turtles. The one that probably is the most important is that tortoises sink in water. They can't swim. Tortoises can live older as well though. Did you know that box tortoises can be bought for around $1,000!

Today Mrs. Buchanan came into our class to show us..... her turtles!!!,I was so extremely exited I felt like my stomach was about to BLOW UP!. As we all settled down Mrs. Buchanan started to talk about the differences about tortoises and turtles. Did you know that if you put a tortoise in water it will float down to the bottom just like a rock and it could drown? because it can not swim or float. When Mrs. Buchanan was talking she also showed us the detail of all the different types of turtles, my personal favourite would probably be the box Tortoise, they are the ones that can actually tuck inside their shells and be safe just like the ones you see on TV!

Turtles mostly end up in turtle rescue because:

-Their owners put their food out of water so they don't eat it (did you know that turtles only eat food under water?)
-Turtle's shells rot witch is in fact called "Shell rot" Holes start to appear in turtle's shells then it gets all puffy and pink inside and when that happens it becomes very ill.
-The children who own them go to intermediate, then collage and sooner or later UNI and the turtles are left behind so they take them to turtle rescue so as they can find another happy home.
-They get fed the wrong food and they also get fed too much

                               Food
Turtles need the right type of food and the right amount otherwise it could get very very ill and die, here are some foods that are very healthy and organic for them:
-Lettuce
-Crickets
-Mozzies
-Dandelions
-Snails
-Worms
It depends on how old they are for the amount you feed them.

Turtles and Tortoises are cute and amazing!
But there are so many types to choose from to be your pet!
So I got a list of turtle & Tortoises you might want to know:

Herman's Tortoise

& The Painted Turtle!

What is the difference between a Turtle and a Tortoise?

Mrs Buchanan's Turtles

Most of them were saved by turtle rescue!
One of them was 53 years old and she only grew about 5 centimeters!
She lived in a small tank but there wasn't enough light/UV so that didn't allow that poor turtle grow!
Turtles can end up in Turtle Rescue easily! Some can be found on the pathway, some can be found in a box, some can be having a health check or maybe even lost!

Without all that equipment, you can't have a turtle so its really important to think before you get one!
Turtles need to be hydrated! That means they need a bath! They also need a 15 minute walk just to stretch out under the sun!

Giant Torbay School Walk

Today we had our Giant Walk to School to promote travelwise. We met at the reserve at the bottom of Deep Creek Road. 

There was a competition and children were asked to decorate their bags. Check out our funky creations. 

We then set off on our walk to school. We met a few friends along the way. 

When we got back to school each class had to decide on the best bag to be judged in the competition. We had a blind vote and the winners were...

Well done girls! Thanks to everyone that was able to come and join us for a little bit of early morning fun. Also a big thanks to the travelwise team and The Walking School bus for organising this event for us. 

Statistics - Data Squares

This week we have started talking about Statistics. To begin with we looked at a data square and talked about what it is.

A data square is a piece of paper that contains four pieces of information about one person.
In the data square above the information has come from four questions:

• Are you a boy or girl?
• Can you whistle?
• Are you the oldest, youngest or middle child in your family? (Only children are classed as oldest)
• Which hand do you write with to produce your neatest work?

Next we were given a set of data squares about about a group of people. In pairs we had to sort the data squares into different groups or categories and present this on a large sheet of paper. When we had finished we made statements about what we had noticed from the data.

Carey Park Camp 2016

Wow! What an amazing time we had from the minute we left to the minute we arrived home. 

Our camp adventure began at school with some team games and a great game of capture the flag. 

After we had morning tea we squashed into the buses and set off to do the Auckland City walk. 

Fun on the buses. 

When we arrived at the Auckland City Walk we got into our groups and headed into the bush. 

We saw some enormous Kauri trees, raced leaves off the bridges and a beautiful Kereru even flew in for a visit.

Next it was time for lunch. We we pretty famished by then!

Finally it was time to head to camp!!!  

You could feel the excitement building in the air as we pulled in to the car park at Carey Park Camp. There it stood welcoming us in for an action packed 3 days. 

We piled off the buses and into the dining hall. We met some of the camp staff who talked about the camp rules and showed us a movie which made us even more excited and we just knew we would have a great time. 

Next we had the task of locating our dormitory or cabin and our luggage...

There was no time to waste as we had our first activity very soon. We negotiated our sleeping arrangements and got what we needed quick smart and before we knew it we heard the sound that would become so familiar at camp... the hooter. 

The year 5 students met in the gym and the year 6s met outside their dorms and we were off on the first activity.

Some of the other highlights at camp were...

- Doing the nighttime games. 

- Making our way through the Burma trail in the dark. Man those parents jumping out gave us a fright. 

- The campfire with magnificent, melting marshmallows. 

- The games evening in the gym. Lisa did an amazing job winning the Sleeping Lions game. 

As always the food at camp was delicious. We enjoyed singing grace before we ate...

We couldn't do cool things like camp without the help of our parent helpers and teachers. They work so hard during camp and we really appreciate everything they do!!!
